The Civil Service Commission oversees the administration of the civil service rules and laws of the City of Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Civil Service rules are the rules the govern employee hiring, firing, and many important aspects human resource administration in city government. The commission is comprised of three members, no more than two of whom can be members of the same political party (this is the reason why the questionnaire asks for your political party affiliation).
No commissioner shall hold any other office under the United States, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or any city or county thereof; nor shall any commissioner serve on any political committee, or take any active part in the management of any political campaign. Members of the Commission are paid. The president of the commissioners shall receive a salary of not less than five hundred dollars per year, and each of the other commissioners shall be paid a salary of not less than two hundred and fifty dollars per year.
